The
Diarist is a collection of the popular Sunday newspaper column ‘NST
Diary’ from 2000 to 2002, written by Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Abdullah
Ahmad when he resumed his journalistic career at The New Straits Times Press (M)
Berhad and later on became its Group Editor-in-Chief.
As events
unfolded in the world around us, Tan Sri Abdullah’s keen eye and sharp
mind provided an insight beyond the usual staple of media reporting, analysis
and commentary. Written in weekly vignettes, this volume sheds an oblique light
on practically every major event that took place during its three-year span.
Topics such as the controversial speeches made by leading politicians, the state
of middle-class Malaysians, the media around the world and the life and times of
famous personalities are opined on here. Addenda are also added to the book to
further clarify facts.
Voiced in the first person, this collection
immediately engages the reader in ‘conversation’, invites him into
the privileged world of Tan Sri Abdullah’s diary and turns the myopia of
daily news into a vision of the age.
