About the Book

CultureShock! Cuba offers an insight into a highly contradictory country, where there are more grey areas than black and white. Here is a balanced account of Cuba’s current realities, a useful guide for people who wish to visit or do business in Cuba. Learn from the locals how they survive in Cuba with the little they have. Find out how the importance of public good over individual right has helped take care of every single citizen in the country. More than just providing the practical information to help you settle into Cuba, the authors draw from their personal experiences to give a deeper understanding of the life and culture of these friendly, warm and straight-forward people. CultureShock! Cuba is your ultimate survival guide to this colourful country.

About the Authors

Mark Cramer and his wife Martha have shared the common joy of living in different cultures. Before anyone coined the term “simplicity movement,” they embarked on a path of radical downward mobility, discarding those consumer luxuries that had tied them down. Rather than globetrotting for photographic glimpses of great places, they settle down in communities where they establish roots and make lasting friendships. Both CultureShock! Cuba and Mark’s FunkyTowns USA (1995) have been used by university professors as assigned texts for their students.

Marcus Cramer, Mark’s son, is a graduate student in Latin American Studies at the University of Paris. He has completed the revision of a book on Bolivia for Marshall Cavendish after having lived in that country. He did volunteer work with the Solón Foundation in La Paz, Bolivia, and has experienced the nitty gritty of daily life in Cuba on his own.
