This collection of 25 stories were written with a fondness for Singapore and its people. The author draws from her childhood years growing up in 1970s Singapore, and all these years later, there isn’t a day when she does not recall a place, event, person or object from that time in her life.

Though written by an outsider – this collection, like those previously published and those yet to be written, add to the melting pot of Singapore literature.

  • Stories are drawn from author’s experience of living in Singapore
  • Each story Is simple yet manages to flesh out the quirks of the main character through a clever use of descriptive language
  • Good pace of writing that is light yet very engaging
  • An entertaining and fun read

Dr Penelope Jackson (née Dickie) MNZM is a New Zealand writer and art historian. She has published widely, including three non-fiction books about art crime and copying, several artist catalogues, multiple journal articles, as well as having short stories included in anthologies.

As a teenager in the 1970s, the author lived in Singapore with her family when her father, an officer in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, was posted to the island. Those years, and subsequent visits, made a lasting impression on her which she has now developed into this collection of stories. She was awarded a University of Auckland Michael King Writers Centre residency in 2020 and was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2023. She has a PhD in Creative Arts.
